Laboratorium Sztuki Społecznej (LSS) to interdyscyplinarny i międzynarodowy projekt wykorzystujący przestrzeń publiczną jako miejsce współuczestnictwa i współdziałania. Ideą projektu jest wspólne działanie artysty i animatora z lokalną społecznością oraz odwrócenie roli  artysty – z kreatora – w nauczyciela i przewodnika sztuki, natomiast mieszkańców – z biernych obserwatorów – w aktywnych odbiorców i twórców kultury.

Poprzez działania lokalne, rezydencje artystyczne i badania, projekt ma na celu budowanie dialogu między lokalną społecznością zamieszkującą dzielnice Lublina, a artystami i animatorami kultury z Polski i zagranicy. Artyści reprezentujący różne dziedziny sztuki, podejmą działania angażujące mieszkańców lubelskich dzielnic, przy aktywnym wsparciu lokalnych animatorów kultury. Efektem projektu jest realizacja działań angażująca lokalne społeczności w tworzenie tętniących życiem przestrzeni publicznych w dzielnicach Lublina, zmianę otoczenia i w życie społeczno – kulturalne.

Laboratorium Sztuki Społecznej powstało w wyniku długotrwałej współpracy z artystami z krajów Europy Wschodniej i Zachodniej oraz z potrzeby działania artystów z lokalną społecznością. Pierwsza edycja programu odbyła się w 2014 jako jedno z wydarzeń lubelskiej odsłony projektu Wschód Kultury, który powstał dzięki zaangażowaniu środowisk twórczych i samorządów wschodniej Polski, Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego oraz Narodowego Centrum Kultury. W 2015 program dedykowany był jedynie polskim artystom, natomiast w 2016 był realizowany jako jedno z wydarzeń europejskiego projektu współpracy międzynarodowej Europe Grand Central.

Community Arts Lab (CAL) is an international interdiciplinary project focusing on using public spaces as sites of participation and cooperation. The idea behind the project is a joint action of the artist and animator with the local community, and the reversal of the role of the artist – from a maker into a teacher and art guide, while the role of the residents changes from passive observers into active recipients and creators of culture.

Throught local community actions, artistic residencies and research, the project aims at building dialogue between the local community living in different districts of Lublin and artists and culture animators from Poland and the European countries. The artists representing different fields of art will carry out activities involving residents of the districts with an active support from local culture animators. Teh outcome of the project is the implementation of actions involving local communities in the development of vibrant public spaces in the districts of Lublin, a change of scenery and social and cultural life.

Community Arts Lab was founded as a result of long-term cooperation with artists from Eastern and Western Europe and the need for action between artists and local community. The first edition of the program began in 2014 as one of the events of the East of Culture project which was created thanks to the involvement of local communities, cultural sector from Eastern Poland, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the National Cultural Centre. In 2015 the programme was dedicated only to Polish artists and in 2016 it was carried out as one of the events of the European project for intenational cooperation, Europe Grand Central.
